School Year Closes with Baccalaureate & Prize-Giving

Justin Bouchard of Newport, Vt. won Stanstead College’s top prize, The Pitcher Prize, at Saturday’s Baccalaureate and Prize-Giving Service, held this year for the first time in the Pat Burns Arena.

Presented to the student who has exerted the greatest influence for good, the Pitcher Prize is the school’s highest award. Justin is a “lifer,” having attended Stanstead College for six years. In addition to the Pitcher Prize, he also won the Graham Chandler Sportsmanship Award, the Donald McG. Hackett Prize for Creativity, the Director’s Award in Theatre Arts and the Cowen House Directors Award.

Justin’s co-head prefect Béatrice Perron-Roy won the Head of School’s Award.

The Wilder Shield, presented to the top junior student, went to Laurie Aubin of Boisbriand Que. She also won the Paul & Dorothy Duncan Award  for the highest overall average in Grade 9, the Kathleen Harper Junior Public Speaking Prize and Grade 9 prizes for History, Science, Technology and French.

Oscar Rosen earned the top average in Grade 12 Gordon Usher-Jones Memorial Prize (to the Grade 12 student who has attended Stanstead College for one  year and who has made an exceptional contribution through involvement in all aspects of school life), the Spofforth Trophy for Excellence in Science and Mathematics and the Chemistry Prize.

The service included many tributes to Head of School Michael Wolfe, who retires at the end of this year after 18 years as head.

Colleague and friend Dugie Ross noted in particular Mr. Wolfe's incredible level of care for students.

"He realizes that educating young people is more than a good report card, and he has always been willing to give a student a second chance," said Mr. Ross. "It is the realization that children mature at different speeds and that one size does not fit every student. I was reminded of this on numerous occasions when Mike and I participated at different alumni events around the world. Many times, alumni would acknowledge the appreciation they felt towards Mike for helping them along as they found their way."

Mr. Wolfe reflected on his time at the school and thanked those who supported him and made it possible, especially his family.

In addition to academic prizes, there were a number of athletic prizes, including top junior and senior by and girl athlete of the year. They were Rosalie Tremblay (Grade 9), Josh Lippmann (Grade 9), Chaz Grenier (Grade 11) and Alice Sauriol (PG).

the Allan Family Friendship Cup (to a student who has attended Stanstead College for at least one year and
who has shown exceptional friendship, camaraderie, kindness, and support to all members of the school community across age, gender, language, cultural, and other boundaries) went to Lysa Kabirigi, Grade 12.

Kate Emms won the Rotary Club Service Award for service above self in the school community.
