Sports Year Closes with Athletic Assembly

A new trophy to honour former athletic director Erik Van Dyke was one of the highlights of the Spring Athletic Assembly, held at Centenary Church on Monday, June 5.

The new MVP badminton trophy recognizes Mr. Van Dyke’s belief that badminton could be and should be a part of the athletic program. Since its introduction, badminton has grown in success and popularity at the school. The inaugural trophy was won by Béatrice Perron-Roy, Grade 12, who won gold in singles, doubles and mixed doubles events and who always showed “excellent effort and fun,” said coach Michael Wolfe.

Logan Sawyer, Grade 12, received a Major S and his second MVP trophy of the year, this time for boys lacrosse. Already earning a trophy for varsity boys hockey, Logan was a franchise-changing player, said coach Simon Winquist, someone whose positive attitude matched his talent, including some breathtaking plays.

In girls lacrosse, Zoe Charland was a first-time Major S winner and MVP recipient, described by coach Shannon Garrett as “the most beautiful, graceful lacrosse player.”

Lydia Walsh earned her first Major S award as well as the Roger Marino MVP trophy for her performance in senior girls rugby. Coach Eryn Hessian described Lydia as a quiet leader who was well respected by teammates and opponents alike and always steady and dependable.

Zachary Soifer was also a first-time Major S winner, earning the Donald Ross MVP trophy for senior boys rugby. Zac truly embraced the culture of rugby and worked hard, said coach Adam Spirk, maintaining an unmatched level of intensity and positive attitude.

Matteo Paradis earned the Alex Philip Shield for the second year in a row as the top player on the golf team. In tennis, Siena Webster also won the girls shield for her second year as the top points earner on the team, while Caleb MacDonald won on the boys side. Both Caleb and Siena also won Major S awards for their work.

Other Major S winners for the spring season: Alice Sauriol, Ryan Yung (badminton); Jan Haars (tennis); Madeline Lippman (girls lacrosse); Iain Olsen, Ian Nicholson (boys lacrosse); Maria Teresa Calva-Xolalpa (girls rugby); Shun Hatano, Chaz Grenier (boys rugby)
